1/10/2024 0 Comments Penny for your thoughtsIn such wise yt not wtoute som note & reproch of suche vagaraunte mind, other folk sodainly say to them: a peny for your thought.Ī rough paraphrase of the above is “when people notice that someone appears disengaged and wish them to rejoin the conversation, they ask ‘a penny for your thoughts’.” In 1535, Sir Thomas More wrote in A Treatyce upon the last thynges (‘Four Last Things’): James Rogers in the “The Dictionary of Clichés” says that the saying is from a time when the British penny was worth a significant sum. Looks like the phrase is at least 400 years old, and so getting a precise etymology may be hard. It is an invitation to a person who looks like they have something to say, but hesitant or lost in thought to express their ideas. The simplest meaning for “a penny for your thoughts” is: “What’s on your mind?” or “Tell me what you are thinking,” especially when someone looks pensive, or they haven’t said very much and have been quiet for a while about a specific topic. I would love to connect with you, hear your story and continue growing this amazing path of discovery. When you hear someone says that they would give you a penny for your thoughts, you might imagine yourself getting paid for your all the things that go through your head, and consequently, you would be rich! But that is why this is just an idiomatic expression. My latest project is a series of books that highlight ordinary people with extraordinary stories called The Factor Series.Ĭonnecting with people, creating their stories through my photography and writing has been a journey of discovery for me and for the brave people that honour me with their stories. In Penny’s world, you will read blogs that come from my observations about everything from bad manners to the latest recipe that rocked my dinner plate. Once I looked past what had been holding me back, “A Penny for your Thoughts” was born and has quickly become a labour of love and passion project that is spreading farther than I ever dreamed. It was then that I began questioning why I had been okay with just being okay. These programs challenged me to break through my comfort ceiling, creating a new way of living. My self-discovery began through a series of programs that, surprisingly changed my life. I made a promise to myself that if I won the battle I was facing, I would never again settle for anything less than “the best”. ![]() In September of 2016, I suffered a life-threatening illness and my relationship with the man I thought I would grow old with ended. My story is all about new beginnings and allowing ease for a peace of mind that what is, is and what is meant to be will come. I believe in living life like an upwelling of the ocean, pulling nutrients from deep inside my soul and feeding the nutrient depleted surface. This burst of energy drives me every day to be bolder in my quest to live my best life truly being my authentic self, not just dreaming about what could be. ![]() The feeling of crossing items off my “bucket list” gives me immense pleasure, and a fulfilling sense of accomplishment. In addition to photography and writing, I love to travel, discover new experiences and connect with people all over world. I am a proud busy mom to two amazing young women and “Grandma” to their fur babies. I was raised and have lived in several provinces in beautiful Canada. The concept for my site began as a simple idea to merge two of my passions in life, beautiful photographs and discovering people’s unique stories. ![]() Hi, I’m Penny Purvis, enthusiastic photographer, writer, public speaker and creator behind “A Penny for your Thoughts.” I have created a place with featured opinion blogs, feel photography and an opportunity for you to share your thoughts and feelings.
